How to Set Up Your Own DIY Fireworks Show: A Step-By-Step Guide

How to Set Up Your Own DIY Fireworks Show: A Step-By-Step Guide

Fireworks are a fantastic way to celebrate, whether it’s for a holiday, a special event, or just a summer evening with friends and family. If you’ve ever wanted to create your own DIY fireworks display, the good news is that it’s possible with a bit of planning, the right materials, and attention to safety. There are even boxed kits available with all the firework components!

In this guide, we’ll walk you through the entire process of setting up your very own fireworks show, from securing the perfect location to launching your grand finale.

Step 1: Find a Legal and Safe Location

Before you can start setting up your fireworks show, it’s crucial to find the right location. Be sure to check local laws and ordinances to confirm that fireworks are allowed in your area. A little research upfront can save you a lot of trouble later! An ideal setting for a firework show is a large, open area like a field or lawn that is free from obstructions like trees or buildings. The space should be big enough to allow for safety zones for both your fireworks and spectators.

Pro Tip: Notify nearby residents before the night of your show. Not only could it prevent a neighbor’s call to law enforcement, it’s a common courtesy to allow surrounding households to prepare accordingly.

Step 2: Gather Your Fireworks Materials

Once you have your location ready, it’s time to gather the materials you’ll need for your show. You can assemble a show with specific fireworks of your choosing, or opt for an all-in-one fireworks show kit. (Plan ahead by asking your local retailer to order a show kit from Spirit of ’76 for potentially better pricing!)

A good fireworks kit, such as our 10-minute show kit, includes everything you need for a professional-grade display, including:

  • Fireworks: A selection of aerial effects for your display. We love to incorporate multi-shot cakes!
  • Fuse: The necessary rolls of fuse to connect your fireworks in a timed sequence. (Optionally, you could launch your sequence with a simple electronic firing system, such as the Ignite Firing System).
  • FuseConnex (optional): A tool to help securely attach fuses together.
  • Our kits also contain a Show Diagram: A layout of your fireworks setup to guide your arrangement.

‼️ Pro Tip: Designing Your Own Show

If kits aren’t your thing, a simple way to design your show is to choose several multi-shot cakes with performances you like, and fuse them all together. (Check out the ’76 Show Series for items that tell you exactly what effect they display.) Refer to each firework cake’s video to see how long its performance will go. Throw in some artillery shells for bigger breaks or a grand finale, making sure to have appropriate reloadable racks to fire them with. Once you have your desired show plan, get the appropriate amount of fuse rolls (most come in 20ft rolls) to fire through the entire show duration.

Whether you’re using a kit or creating your own display, don’t forget to also gather safety gear and some tools/hardware based on the setup or launch method you choose; see remaining steps for details.

Step 3: Gather Your Safety Gear

Safety is paramount when dealing with fireworks, so make sure you gather the following safety gear:

Safety Gear: Eye protection and water source(s) are crucial for fireworks displays
Safety Gear: Eye protection and water source(s) are crucial for fireworks displays
  • Eye Protection: Safety glasses or even regular glasses will protect your eyes in the case of any sparks or debris. Everyone helping with setup should wear eye protection.
  • Water Source: A bucket of water, garden hose, or a water pressure fire extinguisher should be accessible at all times throughout setup and the show. It’s also recommended for safe firework disposal.

And very importantly, make sure the area is cleared of spectators, and they are at least 150 feet away from your fireworks setup.

Step 4: Measure and Mark Your Fuse

Now we’re ready to get into the setup. (If you’ve chosen to use an electronic firing system to fire the entirety of your show, you can skip this step.) This part is establishing the Main Fuse to which your fireworks will be connected at certain lengths, determining the duration for your show. If you’re using one of our show kits, you’ll have a show diagram showing where to measure and mark your fuses to space the fireworks out accordingly.

In addition to your fuse and show diagram, you’ll also need a measuring tape and marker. Here’s what to do:

  1. Unwind the Fuse: Start by unwinding the roll(s) of fuse provided in your kit.
  2. Measure and Mark the Fuse: Using a measuring tape, mark the fuse at the appropriate distances, as outlined in your show diagram. This establishes your Main Fuse. Pro Tip: Use some paper tape to mark the “start” of your fuse.
  3. Connect Additional Fuse: For shows longer than 5 minutes, you may need to lengthen your Main Fuse by taping together additional roll(s). Continue the process of measuring and marking the fuse where each firework will be connected. (Additional rolls are included in your show kit if applicable; otherwise, you can pick up rolls of fuse for your desired show length.)

Step 5: Lay Out and Stabilize Fireworks

Next, it’s time to lay out and stabilize the fireworks in your show. You’ll need to make sure your fireworks are securely anchored so they don’t tip over during the display. You can do this in a couple of ways:

  • Option 1: Liquid Nails on Wooden Boards. Secure each firework to a wooden board using Liquid Nails. First, arrange your fireworks on the board according to the diagram (making sure your Main Fuse can reach each firework fuse), mark their positions, and then apply the Liquid Nails to hold them in place.
  • Option 2: Ground Stabilization. If you’re setting your fireworks up on the ground, you can use cinder blocks, bricks, or stakes to secure them (hammer rebar or wooden stakes into the ground near each firework and use tape to keep them in position).

Using either method, first lay out all the fireworks in order of your show and ensure that your Main Fuse can reach each firework fuse according to the connection marks you made. Reposition fireworks as needed, ensuring fan-shape cakes face the audience appropriately, before securing with Liquid Nail or on the ground.

Step 6: Fuse Everything Together

Now, let’s fuse the show together! First, go through and expose the fuse of each multi-shot cake. (If using an electronic firing system, you’ll still expose each firework’s fuse but you’ll use igniters to connect your fireworks to the e-firing module, rather than fuse as outlined in this step.)

You can connect the fireworks’ fuses to the main fuse in a couple of ways:

  • FuseConnex: Use FuseConnex (provided in our show kits) to securely attach each firework’s fuse to the main fuse. Simply align the firework fuse with the marks on the main fuse, create an “X” shape, and close the FuseConnex. For the best results, use pliers to clamp it shut tightly.
  • Paper Tape or Zip Ties: If you don’t have FuseConnex, you can also use brown packing tape or masking tape to secure each firework’s fuse to the main fuse. Zip ties work, too.

Once everything is connected, double-check that each fuse is secure and aligned.

Step 7: Determine Your Firing Method

Now for the most exciting part: lighting the fireworks! You have two main options for firing your show:

  1. Manual Firing: The classic method – use a torch or barbecue lighter to light the main fuse to start your display.
  2. Electronic Firing System: You can use an e-firing system like the Ignite Firing System to control the firing sequence directly from your phone or tablet. (Even if you’ve fused your show, you can still use an e-firing system and one igniter to light your Main Fuse from a safe and cozy distance away.)

Bonus Tip: Weatherproofing

If you’re expecting rain, you can weatherproof your fireworks to ensure they don’t get damaged. Cover the setup with plastic sheeting or trash bags to keep them dry. If you’re using wooden boards, a large sheet of plastic secured with staples works well. For ground setups, simply cover each firework individually with a trash bag. The fireworks will still fire through the plastic if it rains, so you don’t need to worry about a little weather. Keep an eye on wind, however, as high winds will lead to unsafe firing conditions, especially in dry settings.

Step 8: Showtime!

It’s finally time for the big event! But before you light the fuse, make sure to:

  • Wear Safety Goggles: Protect your eyes at all times.
  • Keep the Water Source Handy: In case of emergencies, have your fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of water nearby.
  • Check Your Distance: Ensure that all spectators are a safe distance away from the setup. We recommend at least 150 ft between the fireworks and your audience.

Once you’re ready, either light the main fuse manually or use your Ignite system to start the show. Then, sit back, relax, and enjoy the stunning display of color and light you’ve worked so hard to create!

After the Show: Clean-Up and Safety

Once the fireworks show is over, let everything cool completely before handling any fireworks. It’s a good idea to soak any remaining fireworks in water to prevent them from re-igniting. Leave them overnight to fully cool before disposal. Dispose in an outdoor metal trash bin.

Final Thoughts

Creating your own DIY fireworks show can be an incredibly rewarding experience. By following these steps and prioritizing safety, you can enjoy a spectacular display that will leave everyone in awe.

Just remember: safety first, have fun, and enjoy the thrill of setting off your own fireworks!

Happy shooting, pyros! 🎆

Compact Fireworks Packaging: Save Space for Reduced Shipping & Container Costs

Compact Fireworks Packaging: Save Space for Reduced Shipping & Container Costs

Ever purchased fireworks wholesale for delivery or drop-ship? Those who have know how vital every inch of space on a pallet or container is. Smaller case sizes can make a world of difference. The smaller the case, the more products can fit in one shipment, achieving a more cost-effective order and delivery.

Fireworks businesses can maximize their case quantity by selecting products with compact packaging. These items help retailers and display companies stretch their budgets as much as possible on large wholesale or container orders.

What is compact packaging in fireworks?

Firework products in compact or compressed packaging are specifically designed to eliminate unnecessary piece space. This allows for smaller case sizes, which in turn reduces shipping and storage costs.

There are multiple ways to achieve a reduced case size, including:

  • Reducing the amount of cardboard within each piece (ie, spaces between tubes in a multi-shot)
  • Reducing the size of cardboard package housing each piece or pack
  • Replacing cardboard packaging with flexible PVC bags
  • Designing assortment packages to avoid header card attachments

Below is a video from our warehouse showing examples of products with compact packages and the difference in case sizes. Examples in the video include compact 500 Gram Multi-Shots, reloadable Artillery Shells, Tube Racks (or Nine-On-A-Boards), and Assortments.

Which fireworks products reduce space with compact packaging?

Selection and availability of compactly packaged consumer fireworks are expanding!

Here is a list of compact fireworks products that Spirit of ’76 carries. We recommend these as items that ship in smaller case sizes yet don’t compromise on quality or shelf appeal.

Compact 200 Gram Multi-Shot Cakes

MS530S 105-shot Multicolor Zipper Cake (6/1) – ‘76 Show Series. Reduced tube spacing for a smaller footprint.

MS123 Air Defense 100 shots (12/1) – Sky Bacon Fireworks. A long-lasting cake in a tiny package.

MS173 Mechanical Bug 100 shots (8/1) – Brothers Pyrotechnics. An affordable Brothers best seller with mixed effects.

MS155 MicroPigzilla 108 shots (12/1) – COMING 2025 to Sky Bacon Fireworks. The mini-er version of Pigzilla!

Compact 350G & 500 Gram Multi-Shot Cakes

GM1016 Neon Moon 181 shots (4/1) – Winda Fireworks. Rows are pressed together for space reduction, yet it’s still wide like most zipper cakes for stability.

GM172 I Love It Loud 33 shots (6/1) – Sky Bacon Fireworks. Fantastic effects, awesome shelf appeal, and a great value with six in a case!

MX165 Ultimate Celebration 37 shots (8/1) – Sky Bacon Fireworks. This cake has all the effects of a great cake, with eight to a case.

MX120 Old Ironsides 30 shots (8/1) – Brothers Pyrotechnics. A classic with nice pacing and loud breaks!

GM102 Ultra Concentrated 162 shots (6/1) – COMING 2025 to Tako Pyrotechnics. Great zipper cake, no tube spacing for a smaller footprint.

GM211 MiniPigzilla 182 shots (4/1) – COMING 2025 to Sky Bacon Fireworks. As good as Pigzilla but with a much smaller footprint.

Compact Artillery Shells & Canister Shells

RL225S Supernova Cans 1.75” (12/8) – ‘76 Show Series. Each pack comes in a clear PVC bag rather than a box that folds down to reduce case size. Eight shells fit in each pack, compared to six in traditional shell packs!

RL108 Black Box Artillery Bonus 1.75” (12/8) – Sky Bacon Fireworks. True ball shells packed with 33% more shells than most boxed shell kits.

RL372 Bad Boy Mini Bomb 1” Canisters (36/6) – Shogun. Six different reloadable effects packed in a PVC header bag to save space.

Compact Tube Racks (Nine-On-A-Board)

TB128 2” Titanium Willows 9 shots (4/1) – Tako Pyrotechnics. Two-inch tubes rather than three-inch to take up much less space. These break slightly lower in the sky to still achieve that big burst effect.

TB215 Khaotic Kaboom 9 shots (4/1) – Firehawk. A favorite for years in a much smaller and more affordable packaging than traditional NOABs.

TB247 Unstoppable 9 shots (4/1) – Firehawk. Another set of 2-inch tubes with hard-hitting breaks.

TB288 Solar Blast (12/6) – COMING 2025 to Winda Fireworks. Much shorter, compact 5-inch tubes compared to similar non-reloadables. Performs like a 60-gram canister shell!

#PowerOfPink – The Firework that Battles Breast Cancer

OCTOBER 2024 – Breast Cancer Awareness Month is upon us. This year, the team behind Sky Bacon Fireworks is on an awareness mission.

According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, an estimated 310,720 women and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2024.

The fight against breast cancer is a personal one for John Bechtold. John (Spirit of ’76 Fireworks president and Sky Bacon Fireworks creator) lost his sister, Meghan Trulaske Miers, to a battle against breast cancer in April 2024.

To honor Meghan’s memory and to support those still battling breast cancer, John and the Sky Bacon team developed “Power of Pink”.

Power of Pink is the first firework product to benefit breast cancer awareness with every sale. It is a 350-gram consumer multi-shot firework cake featuring 25 shots of powerful pink bursts and gold glitter.

The item retails at a fixed price of $30, with $10 of the proceeds from each sale benefiting Breast Cancer Awareness organizations.

Fireworks plus (and ON) Drones: ‘Cosmos’ PyroDrone Display at 2024 PGI Convention

‘Cosmos: A Space Odyssey’ PyroDrone Display at 2024 PGI Convention

It’s not quite boots on the moon, but pyro on drones is still pretty sweet.

‘Cosmos: A Space Odyssey’, shot as the grand public display at the 2024 Pyrotechnics Guild International convention, featured fireworks being launched from drones and was the closest physical integration of fireworks to drone sequences in a US display to date.

On August 9th in Brainerd, Minnesota, we co-presented a massive pyrotechnic + 1800-drone integrated pyromusical display at the 2024 Pyrotechnics Guild International convention.

At 1800 drones, this is the largest drone show in Verge Aero’s network yet. Ninety of the drones were mounted with up to 4 pyro cues.

For this special display, we sourced the finest effects in all of Italy: more than seven hundred ’76 Italia 1.4 single shots and over five hundred 1.3 shells (3″ to 6″) from Giuliani Fireworks.

The best folks in the display business came together to produce this show, and it was no small or easy feat! Show producer Peter Rogoz (VP of ’76 Pro Line) and Verge Aero’s Joel Robinson on-site talk about the vision and unique challenges in our behind the scenes video below.

What’s In Store for Firework + Drone Integrations?

The sky is literally the limit! Our goal with this show was to experiment, test the limits of “pyrodrone”-ing, and provide inspiration for the next *professional* experiment.

Spirit of ’76 and Verge Aero teams hopped on the ’76 podcast to recap lessons learned and muse what’s in store for pyro/drone integrations going forward. Listen below, click here to listen on Spotify, or search for 76 BoomCast on Spotify. Recap chat begins at 16:30.

Key Players & Special Thanks

This show was no small feat and could not have been accomplished without everyone involved. We’d like to thank all our partners–including Verge & their network companies, Astro Magic FX, J&M Displays, Ace Pyro, and the PGI–as well as the volunteers who helped us up until the last possible minute.

From planning to execution, at least a dozen companies and 50+ individuals were involved including:

4 Patriotic Fireworks Ideas for an Amazing Backyard Display

Level Up Your 4th of July Show: Ideas for Amazing Red, White & Blue Scenes

When it comes to making an impactful 4th of July show your guests will remember for years, incorporating a variety of the best-quality effects is key.

One of the biggest tips we can offer for creating an unforgettable display is to thoroughly research your products. The best effects make the most impactful scenes! Adding product variety will also bring your display to the next level.

Our resident pyros highly recommend trying out ’76 Show Series. It’s a line of dedicated-effect 1.4g consumer fireworks designed with displays in mind.

See how these specific-effect fireworks can enhance your July Fourth show:

Low-Level Patriotic Barrages with Roman Candles

Roman Candle barrages provide a great low-level, rapid-fire effect that lasts for 30-40 seconds. We like to place 2 together angled in a V pattern at each firing position. Check these out:

Assorted Cases of Red, White, & Blue Cakes

When filling the sky with our country’s colors, spacing out dedicated-color cakes can provide a cleaner red, white, & blue scene than multi-color cakes. That’s what makes assorted cases a fantastic option! These contain 1 cake of each color:

Mix In Massive Shots

Generally speaking with multi-shot cakes, the lower the shot count, the bigger the BOOM! Here are our favorite big-breaking cakes:

Safer & Better Shooting with IGNITE Electronic Firing Systems

⚠️ For a successful IGNITE-fired show, don’t forget to:
1) Upgrade your module collection
2) Stock up on 2m Igniters
3) Read up on IGNITE’s Best Practices

If you haven’t tried an electronic firing system yet, this may be the year to upgrade.

We highly recommend the IGNITE Firing Systems for consumers and backyard enthusiasts. These are extremely user-friendly firing systems that run off a mobile app. Multiple modules can be synced together to launch your entire display.

All items in the ’76 Show Series are designed to be compatible with the IGNITE Firing System.

IGNITE comes from the creators of Cobra Firing Systems and is trusted by thousands of shooters every year – including us!

Why use an electronic firing system?

Sure, the thrill of hand-firing fireworks on Independence Day can be exhilarating (even if it isn’t the safest), but seeing the bursts from directly underneath doesn’t allow you to watch the fruits of your labor if you’ve put any thought into show choreography.

You can fuse your show, but timing your fuse just right is a tedious and labor-intensive process, and it won’t give you nearly as much control over all aspects of your launch as an electronic firing system can provide at your fingertips.

For these reasons, we highly recommend upgrading to an electronic firing system like IGNITE.

We wish everyone a happy and safe Independence Day celebration!

Artillery Shell Safety

Remember to understand the laws in your area, use common sense, and follow fireworks safety best practices when enjoying fireworks this season.

Top 10 Artillery Shells of 2024

We’re excited to unveil the ten best artillery shells for 2024 celebrations!

**Shell Size Guide: 1.5″ and 1.75″ refer to the diameter of a ball or canister shell. Alternatively, 5″ and 6″ Canisters refer to the length of a canister shell.**

#10 – Festival Balls – 1.5″ Ball Shells

True ball shells are a staple for summer fireworks fun. These come at an especially attractive price point!

#9 – Grand Slam – 1.75″ Quad-Break Shells

Each uniquely shaped quad-breaking shell propells four incredibly vibrant effects into the sky.

#8 – 24 Turbo Charged – 1.5″ Canisters

Crazy impressive breaks for 1.5″ canister shells! The slimmer size puts 24 Turbo Charged at a fantastic price point.

#7 – Rubicon – Single, Double, & Triple Breaks

This monster kit has all the firepower you need. Contains 88 assorted shells with a total of 160 breaks! Rubicon is one of our most popular shell kits to date.

#6 – Black Site Armaments – 6″ Canisters

Contrary to the name and bada$$ packaging, the power of these shells is no secret! Each one of these 18 assorted-effect cans fills the sky upon breaking.

#5 – Alien Invasion – 6″ Canister

The mines are what set this shell kit apart from the rest. Each mine leads up to a huge break with amazing color.

#4 – 5″ Hellcat Cans

These shells are just too dang good. How could they NOT make our Top 10 list?! Sky Bacon’s premium 5-inch canisters are best-selling bangers every single year.

#3 – Titanium Willow Shells – 5″ Canister

We just shot these over the weekend, and WOWZA! Rich golden willow breaks are accompanied with a sweet effect like red lace, color pearls, or strobes.

#2 – 5″ Plutonium Shells

Tako Pyrotechnics never fails to impress, and these nuclear canisters are no exception. Each monster-sized shell breaks in an amazing display with gold, silver, or red radioactive lace.

#1 – Supernova Cans – 1.75″

Back and better than ever! These famously hard-hitting shells debuted a new look under ’76 Show Series. Supernova Cans offer the most powerful and symmetrical breaks you can find in consumer fireworks, and are officially our favorite artillery shell this year!

IGNITE Firing Systems Best Practices: Essential Tips for a Stress-Free 4th of July Fireworks Display

IGNITE Firing Systems Best Practices: Essential Tips for a Stress-Free 4th of July Fireworks Display

As the summer heats up, Spirit of ’76 and the IGNITE Firing Systems team wanted to share some best practices to help ensure your fireworks display goes off without a hitch. Follow these tips for a smooth, stress-free show and make this season unforgettable.

Topics included in this post:

Shoot fireworks with your smartphone with IGNITE

Interested in shooting your show easily and from a safe distance away with your smartphone? Check out IGNITE Firing Systems modules and our pre-designed fireworks display kits.

Dry Run Your Show

IGNITE Firing Systems module

Prior to the day of your shoot, take your module to the shoot site and place it where you intend to during your show. No igniters should be connected at this point. Fire your show and watch the module and make sure the burst turns white when a cue fires. No need to watch every cue fire, but rather make sure your modules stay connected and everything feels normal during your show including any audio you plan to play.

Additionally, simplify your setup check by using our Quickplug 6-Cue Tester. This compact tool quickly verifies cue activation and ensures your module’s readiness for a seamless show.

Playing Audio to Your Audience

IGNITE Firing Systems Bluetooth Audio PyroCast

We understand that many of our users utilize Bluetooth audio for their shows. While IGNITE fully supports this feature, we do not recommend connecting to multiple Bluetooth audio devices simultaneously, as this can impact reliability and performance.

As an alternative, for a seamless and reliable audio experience, we recommend using Pyrocast, our robust audio broadcasting tool designed specifically for synchronization during your shows. It is an excellent alternative to sending audio via Bluetooth.

Module Colors Matter

IGNITE Firing Systems Module Colors

When scripting your show with multiple colors, ensure you actually use these colors on your modules. If you script a color but don’t use it, the system will try to fire effects on non-existent modules, causing missed cues. Stick to your script’s color plan for smooth execution.

Free-Shooting

IGNITE Firing Systems Free Shooting

To manually fire cues, you must use the free-shoot screen. Firing from the modules screen is not possible.

9V Battery – Use for Emergencies Only

IGNITE Firing Systems Emergency 9V Backup Harness

When using the Emergency 9V Backup Harness, please keep the following in mind:

  • Use the 9V battery as a backup for emergencies only when your LiPo battery is fully drained.
  • The 9V battery won’t fit in the LiPo battery compartment, so the door won’t close properly.
  • For optimal results, use Energizer or Duracell 9V batteries.
  • The 9V battery isn’t “more powerful” than a LiPo battery. The module fires based on current, not voltage, so even though the LiPo battery is 7.4V and the 9V battery is 9V, the LiPo battery is the appropriate choice when available.

Raise Module Off Ground

IGNITE Firing Systems Raise Module Off Ground with Bucket

Raise your module using a five-gallon bucket or other platform. This will help maintain line of sight and reliable communication. Always maintain phone line of sight during shows.

Confirm Signal Strength

IGNITE Firing Systems Signal Strength

Stand at the desired shooting distance from your modules. Connect to the modules using the app and from the modules section, confirm at least two signal bars for each module.

Clip Igniter Onto Fuse

IGNITE Firing Systems How to Connect Clip-On Igniters

Always clamp the mouth of the igniter head on the fuse like a clothespin on a clothesline. This will ensure optimal filament contact with the fuse.

Firing Your Show Out-Of-Range

IGNITE Firing Systems Firing Your Show Out-Of-Range

Before starting a show, you have the option to select if you would like the module to continue firing if it goes out of range.

Update Your App

IGNITE Firing System Update App

To ensure you have the best experience with your IGNITE firing system, we highly recommend updating your app to the latest version. App updates bring valuable improvements, bug fixes, and new features that enhance the functionality and performance of your firing system.

Keep Fireworks Safety In Mind

In addition to the above Best Practices, please keep fireworks safety in mind when testing and setting up your show. When you are armed or arming, treat your module as a loaded gun. Do not place your body over the trajectory of any fireworks, and treat them as if they could fire at any time. When you are performing continuity checks, announce this to your crew and allow them to move clear of any product. Click here for printable safety tips!
