One of the biggest questions people have when they want to start a fireworks business is ‘Where should I sell fireworks?’ or ‘How do I find a location to sell fireworks?’. This step may be easier than you think! Follow our guide below to help you choose and secure a location to sell fireworks.
Location is a very import consideration when determining where to sell fireworks – especially for seasonal retailers. If you don’t have any land or your land is remote – don’t worry. Most fireworks retailers don’t own the land where they sell. For seasonal sales it is usually better to rent a spot than to purchase land with the sole purpose of selling fireworks.
So how do you determine the best location? There are four very important attributes to take into consideration when choosing where to set your retail location:
1) Traffic
2) Visibility
3) Ease of access
4) Cost
Traffic is something that you may be able to estimate if you are familiar with an area. You probably know which intersections in your town are the most difficult during rush hour, or where popular attractions pull a lot of cars. These are good places to start. Another option is to find a traffic count for roads in your area.
A traffic count is the average number of cars that pass a point in a 24-hour period. Most states record this information for planning and maitenance. For example the links below show maps of Texas and Missouri. For Texas, just zoom in on an area of interest to find out how many cars pass a spot each day. For Missouri, choose the region your are interested in and zoom in on the corresponding map.
For other states, just Google “traffic count (state)” and you should find the right information on the first page. Other places to look are ArcGIS and Kalibrate.
Visibility should be your next consideration. Now that you have an area picked out take a look on Google Earth, or better yet, drive around to get a feel of traffic flow. This exercise will allow you to SEE what sticks out and were people will be able to see a tent or stand. Locations at an intersection typically have the most visibilty. However this can hinder ease of access.
Ease of access is simply how easy it is for customers to get to your location. A location may have great visibility, but if cars have to drive a mile past and come back, it will reduce the number of potential customers willing to make the trip. It may also mean that cars who see you first end up driving past to a competitor’s location.
Parking is rolled into ease of access. If you can only park 10 cars, then you are unlikely to ever have more than 10 customers at a time. If there is a large field or shared parking lot for your customers, it will entice them to pull in.
Cost can be a make or break decision for a location. If you have sold fireworks before, you may have a good idea of what a location costs. For new retailers, this is a big question. ‘How much should I pay for a location?’ is a very frequent question and one that is not easily answered. Here are a few things to consider:
– $500 – $1,000 is a good starting place. This is what many of our customers pay for the busiest intersection in a very small town.
– $5,000 – $10,000 is not uncommon for high-traffic areas with a history of solid fireworks sales.
– Liability is the largest concern for the owner. Ask your sales rep how we can extend insurance coverage to you and the land owner.
Many new fireworks retailers want to know what fireworks to buy, or how they should place their fireworks order. We have worked with hundereds of fireworks stores, tents, and stands around the country on placing orders for their business. Below are general guidelines on how you can make the best purchasing decision for your business.
1) Plan your product and pricing strategy
Look at our website or catalog and you will see there are many fireworks categories. Most companies will try to offer multiple options per category. Variety is great, but should be done with a plan. Make sure you have multiple price points within each category you offer, and that you only offer products that are legal at your location.
People ask us how much they should mark up thier fireworks. While pricing has a lot of variables such as cost and competition, generally 2.5-3x is a good rule of thumb with smaller items demanding a higher markup, and more expensive items taking a smaller markup. Requesting a Suggested Retail Price List from your Account Rep is also a good way to start. Once you have a pricing strategy in place, you can determine what you would sell items for in your location, to make sure that you have low-cost, middle, and premium options in each category.
You also want to make sure you are only selling items that are legal in your area. You can start by looking here to see laws for your state. You should also contact your local governing body to see if there are further restrictions in your area.
Finally, make sure you have enough variety within each category. Once you have low, middle, and high price points covered you can expand the depth of your product line within those categories and price points. Our research has shown that value 500-gram cakes / 350-gram cakes are hot sellers for most retailers. So are artillery shells and 200-gram cakes. Make sure you have enough options in these segments to compete with other local fireworks companies.
2) Plan your specials
As part of your marketing plan, you should have some special deals to encourage potential customers to come to your location. Whether it is buy one get one free, 50% off, free with purchase, or something else, you need to have the product on hand to supply your promotion.
How much stock you will need depends on your special and your location, but we commonly see retailers purchase 5x-8x the normal case count for a special. For example, a company that typically purchase 5 cases of Premium Festival Balls may buy 25-40 cases for a special, depending on how compelling the offer is and how much they are promoting the offer.
3) Order to fill your shelves and backstock
One of the hardest things to determine your first year is how many products you can display. There are many ways to do this, so choose what works best for you. Some companies buy everything they want and find spaces later – adding shelves or peg and hook displays to maximize space. Others estimate the number of items they can place on a table and the number of tables they can place in their location.
Besides having a case out for display, you will need another case (or cases) of backstock for when your tables or shelfs start to run low. If you live close to our warehouse, this isn’t much of a concern as we run extended hours through the fireworks season. If you live further away, you may want to stock up on your first order to avoid a second shipping charge.

The shoot site at I-95 speedway in Lake Havasu, AZ is deal for 1.4g fireworks displays. Dry air combined with a nice desert breeze means we can shoot a LOT of fireworks without fear of being smoked out.
This year’s display featured our “76 Style – Salute to America.” The display was shot using 85 18m Cobra modules spread across 60 unique positions within the track. Shooting displays for fellow pyro’s is a labor love. It’s easy to impress the general public – but it takes a LOT of late nights, top quality products, and countless man hours to setup displays which will impress fellow Pyros.
Thank-you to all the AWESOME volunteers that helped make the show possible! You guys rock!

Location, Location, Location
Finding just the right spot to set up your business is a crucial element of selling fireworks. In order to pull in customers, high visibility and easy access are two of the keys to success. Busy intersections, high traffic areas, and locations with highway frontage are prime spots to get noticed and sell your fireworks.
Start looking for a location as soon as possible. If you can find a business owner with extra space or land that can accommodate you during the selling season, they will usually rent it to you – if it doesn’t interfere with their own business and traffic. Don’t be discouraged if your first choice says no, your second pick just might say yes.
Fireworks Insurance
When starting a business selling fireworks it is important to protect yourself, your family, and your business from liability issues. Spirit of ’76 has the ability to extend our premises and product liability coverage to include your business and if necessary, the owner of the property where you’re selling fireworks. One of our account executives will be happy to tell you more about this feature.
Licenses Needed to Sell Fireworks in Iowa
In order to sell fireworks in Iowa, you will need to get at least two licenses:
• Business License – Selling anything to the public requires you to get a business license and to collect sales tax. You can find the forms you need to start your Iowa fireworks business at this site: https://tax.iowa.gov/starting-business .
• Retail Fireworks License – You must get a retail license to sell fireworks in Iowa from the Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office. More information is available here: http://www.dps.state.ia.us/fm/
It’s a good idea to check with your local city or county government as well. Make sure they don’t have any other regulations or required fireworks permits you need to have before setting up your fireworks stand.
