New Year’s Fireworks Safety Tips
It’s about time to ring in 2022 by lighting up the New Year’s Eve sky at midnight! Before you celebrate with fireworks, please make sure you and everyone celebrating with you knows about fireworks safety. Below are some fireworks safety tips.
We at Spirit of ’76 know firsthand how fun it is to shoot fireworks. Sam and Kendra from our marketing team recently shot some of their favorite items for New Year’s the safe way – check it out below.
Safety Checklist
It’s great to start the night off right with a safety checklist, just like Kendra and Sam did in the video.
Below are safety tips we’ve gathered into a checklist for you to use in your own celebrations. Scroll down for printable versions!
When purchasing fireworks:
- Make sure it is legal in your area to shoot fireworks.
- Only buy fireworks from reliable sellers. Check the Spirit of ’76 dealer directory for authorized fireworks in your area!
- Stay away from illegal explosives and illegal fireworks, and never experiment or make your own fireworks.
- If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
Before the shoot:
- Use fireworks outdoors only in an area without obstructions.
- Have spectators remain a safe distance away from the shooting area.
- Always have an adult present. Never give fireworks to small children.
- The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework.
- Have a water source (a garden hose or a bucket of water) and a first aid kit handy.
During the shoot:
- Read and follow the label directions for each item.
- Place each item on a hard, flat surface.
- Multi-Shot Cakes: Brace with bricks (or stakes and duct tape) to prevent tip-over.
- Bottle Rockets/Stick Rockets/Roman Candles: stick in ground before lighting; brace to prevent tip-over if necessary.
- Sparklers: Consider poking the sparkler through a plastic cup to cover the holder’s hand.
- Light only one firework at a time, and then stand back and ENJOY!
- Never attempt to re-light a firework that does not go off.
- Never throw or point fireworks at anything besides the open sky.
- Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.
- Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
After the shoot:
- Wait 15-20 minutes for items to cool before approaching.
- Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water or allowing them to cool overnight, and then dispose of them in a trash receptacle.
